Thank you all for all of the contributions on a topic that is fundamentally unaddressed by "world wide" media.

Perhaps 20 yrs ago, the National Geographic had a story on modern French agency involved in very substantial task of cleaning up unexploded armaments from World War I !

The armies of the world and those enthusiastic to fund and "cheerlead" their carnage have a LOT to answer for.

Welcome back Karen. As I said on GVO, arms technology remains ahead of social evolution. Perhaps a world at peace and prosperity will one century look back at today's military weaponry, in disbelief that it was ever actually used...

It's a wonderful idea to help the self esteem for these women! I hope that Mr. Traavik will keep going with it to other countries too.

Nice piece Chhunny. As an American you're aware no doubt of a philosophical divide about beauty pageants in the U.S., although the landmine-injury aspect of it definitely creates a different social imperative. Until your story I wasn't aware of this event, seems well intentioned IMO.

And what a sad comment that the world is still laden with such devices. The late Princess Diana, was very active in the effort to eradicate landmines also.

Also of note IMO; you have to win the contest to get the prosthetic - absurd. Governments and private foundations should be covering this hazard well enough that if you've lost a limb to a landmine, the funds are there for a modern prosthetic no matter what. I've seen the devices give amazing mobility back, to some of the American military who've returned home with lost limbs.
