Well done article Scilla. Although the global economy is and will increasingly be powered by consumption, part of that will always be frivolous and ecologically wasteful. So I like the idea of a day in recognition of that aspect of consumerism.

Especially in the First World of course. There is a case to be made about the manufacturing energy consumed / carbon footprint of that thing you didn't need that you bought, and a more extremist case that your waste is somebody's deprivation in the Third World, or even in the ghetto area of your hometown. As in, use that money on something necessary for them instead of discretionary for yourself.

Which comes down to personal values of course. But something symbolic like a Buy Nothing Day is a good way to raise awareness IMO. I like micro-lending org's such as Kiva, on similar grounds (see the B/P Favorites blogroll). A great way to recycle back a little of your discretionary money,
to somebody who can really use it as start-up capital to lift themselves out
of poverty. And as they pay it back, you can keep lending it back out to somebody new.
